Community Service Committee Collections to benefit Special Olympics Chicago and SitStayRead

The Community Service Committee will be collecting monetary donations to benefit Special Olympics Chicago and new children’s books to benefit SitStayRead at the May 12 business meeting.

Physical Collection:  SitStayRead

We are collecting new children’s books for SitStayRead program for children ages 6 to 10 or 1st to 4th gradsitstayreades.

“For more than a decade, SitStayRead has been making a difference in the lives of some of the lowest-income students living in Chicago’s toughest neighborhoods. In 13 years, the program has grown from a pilot in one city library to an established curriculum in 16 schools and five community centers. SitStayRead accomplishes its mission of improving literacy skills and fostering a love of learning in at-risk children using patient, gentle dogs as part of the educational team. The dogs—of all shapes, sizes, ages, and breeds–infuse a sense of fun into the learning process while providing a non-judgmental ear to students who may not be comfortable reading aloud to their peers.”
